The State Government has recognized the importance of managing the area in order to keep the area healthy for sustainable economic development as well as nature conservation. The objective of KCoL is to restore more than 270000 ha of degraded forests. FOBISSEA Schools have the unique opportunity of contributing to this conservation project of global significance by adopting one or more hectares.

An MoU prepared by WWF Malaysia between Sabah Wildlife Dept., ISB, FOBISSEA and an NGO known as Mescot/KOPEL has been signed by all parties giving FOBISSEA Schools access to the area for the purpose of forest restoration. Fifteen plots have been made available in Lot 7 in Block A (see map) for phase one and a further fifteen will be available in Block B.

Restoration of this area will not only contribute directly to maintaining its biodiversity and the survival of such flagship species as orang utan and pygmy elephant, but will also help sustain the forest communities engaged in the forest restoration work and eco-tourism. The project is also of great significance in a global sense in that, comprising mixed dipterocarp and peat swamp forest; it has the greatest potential for carbon sequestration.
